In China this week it is the National Holiday commemorating the anniversary (61st) of communism. As a result, with a bit of fiddling, China basically gives everyone a week off. In February of this year, we thought about this week, and knowing that we were staying in China throughout the summer, decided that we would book a week out of China, where to go?? Well we decided on Koh Samui, Thailand, on the assumption that apart from flights all would be cheap cheap cheap.

So here we are at Koh Samui, a beautiful tropical island with two other families, each with 2 kids. We are staying in very lush accommodations - far surpassing our usual digs, in a villa 30m from the beach and with its own 15m swimming pool. We have twice had the resort chef come into our home and prepare us dinner, and superb feasts they were... pad thai, green curry, panang curry, thai beef salad, whole fish crusted with delicious herbs and spices, super fresh vegetables stir fried but still crisp, and of course spring rolls and chicken satays.

We have laid by our pool basking in the sunshine each day, and wandered at our fancy down to the beach for a play in the sand or the shallows. We have been for a day trip out on a boat to more remote islands, which included kayaking around some cliffs, into caves and then for a rest and a swim on a private beach. So beautiful and peaceful. We have fed and ridden elephants, played under a waterfall, walked for miles along the beach and meandered through the local markets and villages.
